Ben Jaffe, board chairman and part owner of Miami Beaches Fontainebleau Hotel, bought 40 acres of land in Las Vegas to build the finest hotel/casino in the world. This $15 million dollar hotel, Las Vegas' most expensive to date with a 60 foot high tulip-shaped fountain at the entrance, was placarded as "The Tiffany of the Strip".

After building the hotel, Jaffe leased the casino operations to New Orleans gambler "Dandy" Phil Kastel. Kastel was denied a gaming license by the State Tax Commission because of his past association with the notorious Frank Costello in many Louisiana enterprises. Jaffe then asked respected businessman J. Kell Houssels to manage the hotel. Entertainment Director Lou Waters (father of newswoman Barbara Walters) imported the "Folies Bergere" from Paris for the main showroom, and the Tropicana was a success.

Houssels bought out Ben Jaffe in 1959, added the golf course, and nine years later sold the Tropicana to Trans-Texas Airways. The Tropicana had several owners after that before it was purchased by the Ramada Corporation in 1979. The 24 story Tiffany Tower was built in 1977, and a second tower was added in 1980.

The golf course land was sold to Kirk Kerkorian in 1991 to become a new MGM Theme park.

Is the property haunted? Over the years visitors at this hotel are greeted by a large Tiki mask face and many people have reported getting a terrible purple rash after touching it. Some people have reported seeing a strange smoke-like purple hazy cloud  around the mask in their developed pictures taken of it.

April 4, 1957 - Tropicana opening with 300 rooms. The Tropicana is situated near the southern end of the Strip, the Tropicana is a full service resort with 1,875 guest rooms and suites. Many of the rooms in the upper levels of both towers offer excellent views. Though one of the older resorts on the Strip, it continues to compete successfully. The tropical theme is carried through its 5 acre swimming complex of lagoons and grottoes with waterfalls and fountains complete with the only swim-up blackjack game in the world. Three swimming pools including one indoor/outdoor pool. Over 100,00 square feet of convention space, a health spa and a wedding chapel. A nice casino with a 4,000 square foot stained glass canopy.
