My Lush Green Lady
by Teri Sharp
She stands tall and proud in my front yard,
Bending and yielding, but granite-hard,
Producing flowers of a bright, fiery red.
From her stature, you can tell she's well-bred.
Her wisdom is ancient-she's immeasurably wise,
Knowing she'll be reborn after she dies.
She's provided shelter to animal and man,
For climbing children, her branches reach out a helping hand.
I embrace her when I'm feeling tired and worn,
And in no time at all, my energy is reborn.
She's taught me a lot about life and giving—
Her family provides me with the basics of living—
A cool place to rest, pencil, paper, and book,
Fuel needed to keep warm and to cook.
But they came and cut her down one day, with nary a regret,
So to my lush green lady, I dedicate this poem to help repay the debt. |
