December 18, 1993 - MGM Grand Hotel & Casino opened with 5,005 rooms. MGM Grand features 5,034 guest rooms and suites. The front entrance features a 100,000 pound, 45 foot tall, bronze lion statue making it the largest bronze statue in the United States. The pool complex is a huge 27,000 square foot featuring five separate pools including a gently flowing river pool. The 1,000 foot long river pool is the city's longest ride of its kind. There are private cabanas, cocktail service, and a seasonal poolside restaurant, the Caban Grille. There is the convenient $25 million MGM Grand/Bally's Monorail at the rear of MGM which connects to Bally's. There is also an overhead walkway above the Strip which connects the MGM Grand to New York-New York and continues to the Excalibur. Four 30 story towers with nine different room selections and suites ranging from 446 square foot deluxe rooms to the luxurious suites ranging in size from 675 to 6,040 square feet. The 4,200 rooms in the Grand Towers completed an $85 million renovation in August 2000. The Mansion at MGM Grand opened in May 1999 and showcases 29 private villas ranging from 2,400 square feet to 12,000 square feet. The Mansion is available to invited guests only. MGM Grand is centrally located on a 115 acre site at the northeast Corner of Las Vegas Blvd. South and Tropicana Ave. The MGM Grand is located across from New York-New York Hotel and Casino.

On November 30, 1990, the Marina was closed and on October 7, 1991, groundbreaking occurred for the new MGM Grand. The MGM Grand opened in December 1993 with 5034 rooms and suites, making it the largest hotel in the world. The former Tropicana Golf Course was transformed into an outdoor seasonal amusement park with a number of theaters and rides, including the free-fall Skyscreamer and a roller coaster. The MGM complex now includes a 380,000 square foot conference center. In 1999, the former Leo Lion entrance building at the Strip and Tropicana was replaced with the present gold statue of Leo. A pedestrian overpass system at the busy Strip/Tropicana Avenue intersection now links the Tropicana, MGM Grand, New York New York and Excalibur. The MGM Grand was designed by Veldon Simpson; Martin Stern, Jr. and stands at an impressive 30 stories high. Rather than imploding a viable structure, the MGM incorporated the original structure of the Marina Hotel.
