Neonopolis News!
The dreams aren't broken down here - They're just walkin' with a limp...

A hopeful glimmer for Neonopolis
there may be light at the end of the tunnel for
NEONOPOLIS, a neon-themed mall in downtown las vegas
known more for darkened storefronts than attracting tenants and shoppers
to the city's once-proud glitter gulch. general growth properties, one
of the nation's largest real estate investment trusts with more than 200
malls in 45 states, is considering whether it has room for the troubled
shopping center in a national retail real estate portfolio that includes
fashion show mall on the strip and summerlin centre, an upscale
mixed-use mall...

JOHN L. SMTH:
Neonopolis by any other name still has smell of disaster
NEONOPOLIS is no more. you know,
technically speaking. in an announcement last week that somehow failed
to make a jay leno monologue, it was revealed at a city council meeting
that the oft-maligned and questionably designed NEONOPOLIS
would undergo that most dicey of marketing gestures, a name change.
goodbye NEONOPOLIS, hello fremont square. no, really.
they renamed it fremont square. on purpose. you may be excused if this
latest incarnati...

General
Growth drops pursuit of Neonopolis
one of america's largest mall owners won't be
coming to the rescue of NEONOPOLIS, a half-empty
shopping center in the middle of downtown las vegas. officials at
general growth properties of chicago said friday they have no interest
in buying the three-story retail edifice that so far has failed to
attract shoppers downtown, despite making inquiries about the mall
earlier this month. "today we told the city of las vegas that we have
decided not to pursue the opportunity at NEONOPOLIS
that was presented to us," jim graham, a general growth spokesman, s...

Neonopolis
takes another hit as Poker Dome opts to fold
operators of a televised poker venue dealt
downtown las vegas a bad hand this week when they revealed plans to pull
their stake out of the near-empty NEONOPOLIS mall. the
poker dome venue will fold by the end of the summer, meaning no more
nationally televised high-stakes poker matches, which had been the most
prominent aspect of the troubled fremont street mall. the news only
raises the odds against a quick revival for the city-subsidized
NEONOPOLIS mall, a shopping center that is down to two visible
tenants despite its location at the intersection of fremont street and
las vegas boulevard. after the defection, neonopoli...

Mayor: Mall
drawing interest
las vegas leaders are negotiating an exit for
owners of a government subsidized shopping mall at fremont street and
las vegas boulevard. whether they'll find anyone willing and able to buy
the struggling NEONOPOLIS mall and then close a deal
remains to be seen. but las vegas mayor oscar goodman, whose frustration
with the current owners prompted him to openly seek buyers for the
property, said NEONOPOLIS is attracting interest this
week during the international council of shopping center conference at
the las vegas convention center. in the meantime, current owners
wirrulla hayward llc, represented by developer rohit joshi, are using
the conference to troll for tenants to make th...

City bends rules
for Jillian's
one of the few remaining businesses in downtown's
NEONOPOLIS will stay open thanks to the city bending
its own rules wednesday to grant a bar and restaurant a permanent liquor
license. the landlord of jillian's' refuses to submit to a background
check, a requirement under city code for all key members of an
establishment seeking a liquor license. but with only a brief discussion
on the matter, the city council voted unanimously to grant a permanent
liquor license to the bar and restaurant, with a review in 90 days. las

DOWNTOWN:
Old woes but a new moniker
the name NEONOPOLIS will change
but the outlook for the troubled mall remains the same: few tenants, few
prospects and an abundance of skepticism about the operators' ability to
revive the near-empty property. developer rohit joshi on wednesday told
the las vegas city council he plans to re-brand NEONOPOLIS
as fremont square and is in negotiations with four major chains to lure
a department store. he said he is in separate talks to attract two radio
stations and a television station to the proper...

READY FOR A
RENAISSANCE: Bringing People Together
salvation is finally coming to NEONOPOLIS
-- at least for the jewish holidays that begin at sundown wednesday.
valley outreach synagogue will conduct rosh hashana and yom kippur
services at the largely vacant shopping mall at fourth and fremont
streets, in one of the galaxy theatre's 11 screening rooms. "we welcomed
the inquiry," said NEONOPOLIS owner rohit joshi. "we
should do everything we can to help the various outreach programs reach
out to the community." valley outreach rabbi yocheved mintz said t...
