Built in 1957 by Milton Prell, owner of the Sahara, The Mint was located in the center of the 100 block of East Fremont Street. After the Birdcage Casino next door on the corner of First and Fremont Streets went broke in 1959, it was incorporated into The Mint and the new corner entrance was added. Sam Boyd served as vice president until The Mint was purchased by Del E. Webb in 1963. Webb added a hotel tower which featured an outside glass elevator and the Top O' The Mint steakhouse and dance lounge. If you walk west inside Binions past the snack bar, and up a slight incline, you will be in the old Mint building. Binion's Horseshoe Club which was located next door, purchased The Mint in 1988 and incorporated it into the Horseshoe Club. Bird Cage - Opened 1958. Closed only about a year later after two consecutive $25,000 keno jackpots were hit. The club was undercapitalized and was forced to close. Some remodeling was done and the club reopened as part of The Mint.
