1931 - Las Vegas Club - 21-23 East Fremont St./18 East Fremont St.
J. Kell Houssels came to Las Vegas as a member of the surveying crew for
the Boulder Dam project. When gambling was legalized in 1931, he
purchased the Old Smoke Shop at 21-23 East Fremont Street and turned it
into the Las Vegas Club. Houssels' was the third gambling license issued
in Las Vegas. In 1951 the Las Vegas Club moved across the street to 18
East Fremont Street on the main floor and back of the Overland Hotel.
Vic Hall and an investment group purchased the Las Vegas Club in
December 1961. They closed the Overland hotel on the corner of Main and
Fremont Streets in 1977, and for the next three years the Las Vegas Club
stayed open while under construction and remodeling.
