The $6-million, 155 room Fremont Hotel opened at 200 East Fremont Street on May 18th 1956. The 15-story hotel, built by Chicago gambler Ed Levinson was advertised as the Tallest, Newest, and Finest in the heart of downtown Las Vegas. At the time it was so tall that KSHO-TV had studios at the Fremont with the station's transmitter on the roof. The 14-story Ogden Tower, a parking garage, and the 650-seat Fiesta Theater were added in 1963.

Wayne Newton and his brother Jerry first appeared in Las Vegas in the Fremont's Carnival Room in 1959.

Allen Glick's Argent Corporation purchased the Fremont in 1974. The Fremont then changed hands several times before the Del E. Webb Corporation bought the resort in 1984 and then sold it to Sam Boyd in 1985.
